With an economy in shambles and no jobs on the horizon, a lot of people today are turning to the internet in order to start up a home business. In order to have a flourishing business online, however, web design plays a large role. Read up on some great web design tips you can use to ensure that your business is successful.

Pay attention to the colors on your website to make sure they match. Be sure that your written content is clearly visible and easy to read against the background you choose. In general, you want to use a dark font color and a lighter background. Let some of your friends see your site and give you some advice before going live.

Include a search element that allows visitors to search within your website content. If those visiting your site are looking for something specific, the first thing they will look for is a search box. When you don’t have one, they are more likely to move on to another site that does. Always place the box at the top right of the page, as this is the first place visitors tend to look for one.

Don’t force users to install strange BHOs. Many tech-savvy users won’t do it. Common offenders include unusual video players, image viewers, and platforms for interactive games. For most standard use cases, there is a trusted plugin, such as Windows Media Player or even Flash) that will do what you want without driving away users.

Don’t disable the visitor’s right-click functionality. Some sites do this in order to prevent people from copying and pasting text or saving images from the site. The thing is, it doesn’t work and disables other useful functions. OCR can be used to capture text from such sites, and grabbing images is as simple as taking a screenshot.

Use ALT tags whenever possible. These helpful tags describe an image to a viewer, assisting the visually impaired, as well as those who prefer to browse without images. As an bonus, some search engines include these tags in their rankings, so you may get a boost by using them.

Use a style sheet to stay consistent. There is almost nothing more disconcerting than being sent to a page that looks at nothing like the site you were just looking at, even if it is concerning the same subject. Style sheets help with saving your formatting, so each page looks similar to the rest.

If you want your site visitors to spend as much time as possible on your site, make text easy to read. One of the most common design mistakes is using graphic backgrounds with patterns or dark colors; combine this with equally dark text and you have a recipe for disaster. Unless the text is clear and easy to read, your site will not be a success.

You can find many free or inexpensive graphics programs online that will optimize your images before you load them to your website.

To help your website visitors easily navigate through your site, design it so that it becomes easy to find “stuff.” When you have a simple site that makes it easy to locate information, you keep your visitors there much longer. If you make it difficult for them, then they will get frustrated and leave.

If you plan on having a commercial site, you should seriously consider buying your own web hosting. Most free host sites force you to display their advertisements, which is counter-intuitive if you are attempting to sell something as well. Purchase your own hosting to avoid this advertising hassle, so that you can choose your own ads.

Make sure your website uses a consistent font throughout. Some websites change fonts willy-nilly without any design reason to do so. This makes the content difficult to process for visitors. Most websites, especially business websites, will do just fine sticking to basic fonts like Ariel, Veranda, or even Times New Roman.

Avoid frames at all costs. Just don’t use them. While they can make it simple for your menu or header to appear all throughout your site, the address bar won’t change on each page. This can make it impossible for your visitors to link to any specific page on your site.

Always use the same type of fonts so that guest to your site don’t become agitated by reading different types of fonts. You want people to browse through the site with ease so that they can just concentrate on the material on the site and what the site has to offer.

Limit the amount of content you start out with on a given page to small amounts when you first start out. You don’t want to add a bunch of stuff that is going to fluster you because this can make your visitors confused as well when they come visit your site.

Keep in mind that the site you create does not have to be built entirely by you. Content creation, web programming, user interface design, graphic design, and search engine optimization are just a few of the specialized sub-skills that can contribute to great web design.

Looking To Design A Website? Try These Ideas

Website design can be intimidating if you don’t know much about the field. After you complete a few projects, you will improve your skills and find that it is not as difficult as it seemed. The tips which follow can help you to learn what you need to know to get started.

Make sure your site passes the NoScript test. Download and activate the NoScript extension for Firefox and see if your site is still readable. Some content, such as ordering systems for products, can’t work without scripts, but if your site is simply blank with scripts turned off, that’s bad news.

It may look pretty, but stay away from having too many animations on your site. Having your sales splash page rotate, spin and blink may look cool to you, but it will likely drive potential viewers away. When you add too many flashy splashes like that, it makes your site look amateurish which is not the message you want to convey.

Never underestimate the value of a site that is simple for visitors to navigate. Place your links so they can be found easily. Menus are another way to make site navigation easier on your site. Make sure that links to your main pages are on each page in your site so people can find their way no matter where they are.

White space is an important part of web design, so don’t be afraid to use it. Cluttering up your web pages with too many images or too much text, or using a distracting background, will only irritate your visitors. White space can make the important elements of your page more visible.

If you believe your site may be accessed via mobile devices, you will want to keep your designs simple. The use of flash, excessive images, and complicated menus will not translate well to a mobile platform. Keep your page clean and simple, or create a specific mobile site for your users.

Every File Has To Be small file size! Read WhyWebsite Design | Design Your Website Like A Pro

It does not matter how you have designed your website; you have to make sure that every file has a small file size. The reason behind this is because the file sizes will affect how fast your website loads. A website that loads more quickly is always a top priority in web design. You must also be aware that everyone doesn’t have a high speed connection to the Internet. You want to perform a test to make sure your site performs well, even with dial-up modem connections.

Make sure everything is easy to locate on your website. Spend some serious thought on how everything on your site will be laid out. When content is randomly thrown on your site with little thought to the layout, you are making things harder for the people whose use of your site ensures your online success – your site visitors.

For your image tags, always try to include a brief description in the ALT attribute. Not only is this good for search engine optimization, but it is also beneficial to the sight-impaired users who rely on screen readers to describe image tag contents. Make your description short and as descriptive as possible.

While development platforms can ease the coding process, many are not as efficient as a plain old text editor. What a platform does is help you paste the code onto features that you have made. However, if you’re wanting to minimize errors and have an excellent experience, you need to utilize a text editor.

  7. Hi Earl – Great common sense tips on web design. As the saying goes: Kiss-keep it simple s…  I find web designing interesting.  The one thing I am shy about is themes. I have a fear of trying new ones because I am not sure what the change would be.  I suppose when I am more experienced I will be more adventurous.  Thanks!
